    Most occupations in this unit category require a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related discipline. In some cases, five years of relevant experience in the field of engineering or equivalent qualifications may substitute for formal academic qualifications. Civil Engineers may also be required to obtain additional professional certification or accreditation in order to progress in their career.

    English Requirement

    In order to qualify for a visa, applicants must demonstrate English proficiency in one of the following tests:

    IELTS: At least 6 in Writing, Listening, and Reading; 7 in Speaking; and 7 overall.
    OET: At least grade B in all categories.
    TOEFL iBT: At least 12 in Listening, 13 in Reading, 21 in Writing, 23 in Speaking, and overall score of 93.
    PTE Academic: 50 minimum in Writing, Reading, and Listening; 65 in Speaking; overall score of 65.

    Tasks to Perform

    Design and plan the construction of infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, tunnels, airports, and water supply systems in a manner that the designs are according to safety, budget, and environmental standards.
    Plan and oversee the building of civil engineering projects with contractors, architects, and other interested parties to provide projects on time, cost, and to quality standards.
    Assess and analyze potential construction sites based on soil stability, climate, environmental influence, and local legislation.
    Conduct land surveys to determine appropriate construction sites, measure dimensions, and assess site conditions for use in design and construction planning.
    Monitor construction to ensure construction materials, construction methods, and equipment all comply with quality and legal and regulatory requirements.
    Ensure that engineering projects comply with environmental laws and safety standards, including waste disposal, pollution minimization, and avoidance of environmental damage.
    Develop cost estimates for labor, materials, and equipment and manage project budgets to make the project cost-effective.
    Perform structural analysis and simulations to validate that the infrastructure can withstand environmental loads as well as operational loads, such as weather, load, and traffic.
    Identify and assess potential risks on construction projects and employ mechanisms for avoiding or reducing the risks.
    Work with many stakeholders, including clients, contractors, local governments, and other engineers, to ensure projects achieve the greatest likelihood of success and that communication is effective and brief throughout.
