UNIT GROUP: 2332

Geotechnical Engineers

Geotechnical Engineers are specialists in assessing the behavior of earth materials, such as soil, rock, and groundwater, and their interaction with structures. They apply principles of engineering, geology, and physics to assess and solve problems related to the foundation, stability, and structural design of structures built on or in the earth. Geotechnical Engineers have a critical role in ensuring safety and stability in infrastructure, particularly in tunnel, dam, bridge, road, and building construction projects. They are crucial in evaluating site conditions and recommending design solutions that can minimize risks due to soil movements, water intrusion, and other geotechnical problems. 233211 Civil Engineer is another occupation in the 2332 unit group.

Skill Level

Most occupations within this unit group require a degree in geotechnical engineering, civil engineering, or a discipline related to it. Five years of experience or equivalent qualifications are sometimes substituted for the formal degree. Additional training or certification could also be called for depending upon the complexity and specific nature of the projects.

English Requirement

To be eligible for a visa, one must demonstrate their English language skills by taking one of the below examinations:

IELTS: At least 6 in Writing, Listening, and Reading; 7 in Speaking; and 7 overall.
OET: At least grade B in all categories.
TOEFL iBT: At least 12 in Listening, 13 in Reading, 21 in Writing, 23 in Speaking, and overall score of 93.
PTE Academic: 50 minimum in Writing, Reading, and Listening; 65 in Speaking; overall score of 65.

Tasks to Perform

Conduct site investigations to ascertain the conditions of soils and rocks, groundwater levels, and other factors relevant to designing and constructing civil engineering works.
Design buildings, bridges, and other structures from the results of geotechnical investigations with safety and stability for various loads.
Design and calculate controls to prevent or minimize the possibility of landslides, slope failure, or excavations instability, particularly in works like tunnels, dams, or cuttings.
Recommend ground improvement techniques, such as soil stabilization, compaction, and dewatering, to enhance the strength and stability of weak grounds for construction.
Recommend ground improvement techniques, such as soil stabilization, compaction, and dewatering, to enhance the strength and stability of weak grounds for construction.
Assess and assess geotechnical risks, such as soil liquefaction, seismicity, and settlement, and provide solutions to minimize likely hazards during construction and throughout the project's life cycle.
Optimize costs without compromising safety levels through design optimization, considering soil type, water content, and strength-bearing capacity.
Develop monitoring schemes to monitor long-term structural response and soil behavior, conducting tests to ensure that ground conditions are consistent with design assumptions.
Prepare and design comprehensive reports collating site investigations, soil and rock testing, design recommendations, and construction details, which are of key inputs to construction teams and regulatory bodies.
Coordinate with civil engineers, structural engineers, and other specialists to ensure geotechnical information is integrated into overall design and construction.
Identify the environmental impact of geotechnical activity and propose geotechnical practices that are sustainable and minimize harm to the ecosystem and surrounding communities.
